THE 10th Aberdeen Highland Games will be held on Saturday, July 4 and to celebrate the anniversary there will be more clans, pipe bands and food stalls than usual.
Chief of the Day will be Duncan Macintyre, the commissioner in Australia for Clan Macintyre.
There will also be the usual events such as the Tartan Warrior’s Competition, dancing and music displays, novelty events and War Titles.
Although there will be no street parade, teams will travel to the games from all over Australia to compete at the Australian Tug of War Titles for the National Championship Title.
The Australian Federation Guard Precision Drill Team will also perform this year.
Made up of members of the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force, the guard is the Australian military ceremonial unit who performs for visiting heads of state and dignitaries and at major events such as the Anzac Day ceremony at Gallipoli.
Since it started in March 2000, the guard has gained a reputation as Australia’s premier ceremonial unit both within Australia and internationally.
Aberdeen Highland Games president Barrie Lawn said he went to then Minister for Defence Joel Fitzgibbon to see if he could get the drill team or a military band to perform because there would no longer be a street parade and the games needed something extra.
“The idea of getting the Australian Federation Guard was to add to the colour of the day and they are world class,” Mr Lawn said.
Australian Federation Guard training officer Lieutenant David Schweinsberg said the drills performed by the drill team involve more than 300 specific movements that are made without any words of command being given to the guardsmen.
“The soldiers, sailors and airmen that make up the drill team require incredible levels of skill, concentration and teamwork which are perfected through many hours of practice,” Lieutenant Schweinsberg said.
He said this would be the first Aberdeen Highland Games appearance for the drill team and the men and women were looking forward to it.
Along with the drill team, the Australian military will also be represented by the 12/16 Hunter River Lancers who will have a recruitment detachment at a bushmaster personnel carrier at the games, they will also put in a team into the amateur section of the Tug of War.
