Birthday bash for ladies guild

25 Jun, 2009 10:07 AM
The St Luke’s Women’s Guild held its 100th Birthday celebration on Saturday.

About 25 women attend each of the guilds meetings and about 90 people attended the luncheon that followed the Holy Eucharist church service.

To further celebrate the centenary, the guild created a cookbook which is on sale for $25.

Guild president Beryl Bates said the recipes were supplied by members and friends and described the meals as tried and true.

Mrs Bates said the cookbook has everything in it from soups to scones as well as recipes for special diets such as gluten free and for catering for large groups.

Mrs Bates put in a lot of hours assembling the cook book and Father Glen Hughes designed the cover.

The guild formed in 1909 under Reverend Cadell and during its 100 year history has, and continues to raise money for the church to buy equipment and do repair work when needed.

Along with fundraising for the parish finances, the guild also hold, dinners, dances, coffee mornings, a mock deb ball and the members cater for funeral wakes when required to.

Some of the early events are still being carried out such as the annual fete which was first held in 1910.

During her speech, Beryl Bates said she felt privileged to be president of the organisation.

“I am constantly amazed by the committee member’s stamina,” Mrs Bates said.

Mrs Bates also said the guild had been lucky to have good clergy at the church who were easy to work with.

Several of those former clergymen attended the luncheon including Paul Robertson, Chris Bullock, Ian Howarth and Tony Michaels.

There were also representatives from the of local churches and women from the Uniting Church catered the lunch.

“We thought it was a good day,” Mrs Bates said.
