Chemical pollution not hazardous

19 Jan, 2012 08:59 AM
A chemical pollution in a Scone business last Thursday was found to be harmless according to Fire and Rescue NSW HAZMAT testing.

The pollution occurred some time between midnight and 6.50am at Pronto Pollo in Guernsey Street when unknown persons broke into the food processing outlet and poured a total of 220 litres of mixed cleaning products throughout the premise.

Fire fighters from Fire and Rescue NSW Scone and Aberdeen brigades attended the scene at about 6.55am and after HAZMAT had determined the products, cleaned the premises in chemical splash suits and suitable breathing apparatus.

A further 200 litres of the liquids were removed from the building, as well as 900 kilograms of various food products.

The clean up was completed by 2pm that afternoon.

A section of Guernsey Street was closed for the duration of the clean up.

Hunter Valley Police confirmed that the liquid was a cleaning detergent and was not harmful.

They are awaiting forensic examination results and continuing to investigate the break in.
