Invention to help stock handlers

29 Oct, 2009 08:56 AM
AN invention created by Rouchel teenager Kenneth Miles that appeared on an episode of the New Inventors last Wednesday is in contention for the TV show’s People’s Choice Award.

The Scots College student designed the Vac Sac for his Design and Technology HSC major work and its use was demonstrated on the New Inventors.

Kenneth said he got the idea for the Vac Sac while he was working on his family’s farm on a hot summer day when he read a vaccine container instruction, store between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius and keep out of direct light.

Kenneth said he realised he had never followed these instructions and talked to other farmers discovering they had experienced similar problems.

So when making the Vac Sac he made sure it could fit all commercially available vaccines, a syringe as well as an icepack to keep the vaccines cool. The Vac Sac was also designed to be worn in a way that would let farmers do multiple jobs while still being easily accessible.

Kenneth said he always intended to take his inspiration for the major project from the farm and looked for an area that did not already have a solution.

Other students at his school focused on building furniture, musical instruments and backpacks for their major projects.

Although Kenneth did not win in his episode of the TV show, one of the three judges did vote for him and he is still in contention for the People’s Choice Award.

Kenneth said he enjoyed his TV experience and a calf the Miles’s also took down with them for Kenneth to demonstrate with was very popular with the people on set.

“It was a good experience,” he said.

However, it was a long process and took up most of the day from early morning to mid-afternoon.

Before filming the contestants had to go through their positions, learn where they had to stand and which cameras to look at.

“It took a couple of takes,” Kenneth said.

Kenneth’s mother, Gillian Miles said the judges gave Kenneth very positive feedback as well as advice to progress to the next level and how to make it commercially available.

“It’s getting to the next stage that is the tricky bit,” Mrs Miles said.

Kenneth started the project in November 2008 and spent most of this year refining it, making prototypes, getting the measurement right and making sure the invention did not already exist.

“It took awhile, I had to go through a fair bit of sizing, before we got to the right size in May,” Kenneth said.

“I had to learn how to use a sewing machine and find out how to use different materials,” he said.

He tested the project on the family property in his school holidays, and it will get used again this summer.

The Vac Sac will be suitable for people working with groups of any type of animal and fits any commercially available vaccine it is expected to cost about $30 to $40 and possibly less without icepacks once it is made commercially available.

Once his HSC is complete Kenneth will return to farming and will work on both the family properties at Rouchel and at Trangie.

Although he has enjoyed his experience at boarding school in Sydney, Kenneth said he likes farming and living in the country.

“I wouldn’t want to live in a built up area for a long period of time,” he said.

Kenneth is also planning to travel in 2011 and said he would like to go overseas and to the Northern Territory.
