Residents opinions to be heard at community forum

11 Aug, 2011 09:56 AM
Residents will have the opportunity to voice their opinion on coal mining and coal seam gas exploration and extraction in the Upper Hunter Shire at a community forum next month.

The Upper Hunter Shire Council will hold the forum as part of its investigation, which also includes a trip to Roma and Dolby early next week.

The community forum will be held on Monday, September 5 and Tuesday, September 6 at the council chambers.

Building on their current research and knowledge, the forum will allow the councillors to be accurately informed to make their determination on future exploration and extraction in the shire.

Upper Hunter Shire mayor Lee Watts said representatives from all sides of the debate were invited to represent their case at the forum.

“These issues are very complex, and in making our decisions the council needs to be informed on all aspects, such as the implications for the environment, the economy, regional infrastructure and our community.

“The forum will bring together independent experts and parties with a direct interest in mining or coal seam gas in the Upper Hunter Shire,” she said.

“We are encouraging residents, community organisations and business people to take up this opportunity.”

A full program of expert presenters will be available by Monday, August 29.

If you wish to make a presentation, registration forms are available at all shire offices, by contacting 6540 1100 or emailing info@upperhunter.nsw. gov.au

Watch the DVD 'Gasland' to see what happens in the USA.

The effects of coal seam gas exploration and extraction have a huge cost for arterial water, road maintenance and resident illnesses caused by chemicals and LPG contamination.

To protect your family interests shut the gate and say no to coal seam gas.
