Trumpet silenced, Knights fan removed from game

11 Sep, 2008 09:02 AM
STUART ST HILL has rallied the crowds with his trumpet at several Newcastle Knights home games and the Knight’s have won every time.

But it was a different story on Friday night when Newcastle radio station NXFM paid for the Scone based musician to travel to Brisbane and rally the crowd at Suncorp Stadium for the Knights game against the Bronco’s.

Mr St Hill said security escorted him from the stands early in the game, confiscated his trumpet and threatened to charge him with inciting a riot.

“In the eighth minute after just two “Charge” calls and one “Waa Waa Waa” following a Broncos mistake, everything went pear shaped when a sideline security guard spotted me and called it in,” Mr St Hill said.

“Soon after, two rather large security guards came down the stairs and much to the dislike of the surrounding Knights and Broncos fans alike, I was asked to leave. As they escorted me from the stands I raised my trumpet and the crowd erupted booing the guards for taking me away,” he said.

Mr St Hill said he was taken to a cloak room where his trumpet was confiscated and after his identity was established he was told by security he could be evicted from the stadium and charged with “inciting a riot” because he had raised his trumpet to the crowd to evoke a reaction while he was being removed.

However, he was allowed to return to watch the second half and his trumpet was returned at the end of the game.

Unfortunately the Knights lost. They needed to win to make it into the finals so now their season is over. The Knights are placed in eighth spot.

“It was really disappointing after all the effort that went into getting me there and I take responsibility for the Knights loss - I just know I could have made a difference if I had been allowed to do my thing,” Mr St Hill said.

“I’ll be back next year to help lead the Knights Crusade bigger louder and with more passionate than ever!”

Nicknamed ‘Trumpet Boy’ by the Newcastle media, Mr St Hill, a Scone resident and trumpeter for Newcastle band Fish Fry was recruited by the Knights Crusade to help build atmosphere at home games after flailing attendances and poor crowd involvement.

He said he came to the attention of the Newcastle media last week and was called by NXFM after a sensational performance with the Knights Crusade in the Andrew Johns Stand. He said the trumpet was clearly audible throughout Fox TV coverage of the game when the Knights narrowly beat Melbourne at home.

“I’ve been playing in the stands since the Knights beat Penrith and have had a 100 per cent win record,” Mr St Hill said.

“The only game the boys have lost was away against Canberra, a game I was unable to attend.”

The Brisbane visit was hoped to secure another win for the Newcastle Rugby League team.

NX FM organised Trumpet Boy and his partner flights up to Brisbane with Jetstar, accommodation in a Best Western motel.
