 Charles wins top gong

Charles wins top gong

02 Feb, 2012 02:21 PM
It was an exciting moment for Charles Cooke when he took out double honours at the Australia Day ceremony in Scone last week.

The well known local identity was rightfully recognised for his involvement in the Upper Hunter community winning the 36th annual Hunter McLoughlin Memorial Citizenship Award as well as the overall Upper Hunter Shire Citizen of the Year.

As the crowd cheered with joy, Mr Cooke exemplified his involvement with his kilted attire representing the Scone RSL Pipes and Drums on the day.

Mr Cooke received the award which is each year presented to someone who has been highlighted as an inspirational role model and has made an outstanding contribution to the community over several years.

The award was presented by Mr McLoughlin’s daughter Theresa Farmilo, who spoke on behalf of her mum Ursula and family.

Mr Cooke was recognised for his massive contribution over many years to the local communities of Gundy, Scone and especially Aberdeen.

More than 10 years ago Mr Cooke was the fuel behind the fire that started the ever successful Aberdeen Highland Games, which was also recognised with a special achievement award during the ceremony.

The family man was also a founding member of many community groups such as the Upper Hunter Education Fund Inc which provides opportunities for local students, the Gundy ANZAC Day Committee, Gundy Gala Day Committee, Pages and Isis Catchments Water Uses Group and the Scone RSL Pipes and Drums.

A resident of Gundy, Mr Cooke has been a trustee of the Gundy Crown Reserve Trust for the past 30 years where he has fulfilled a major role.

Mr Cooke said he was deeply honoured to join the other very worthy recipients of the Hunter McLoughlin Memorial Citizenship Award.

He said he was rather shocked as he didn’t expect to win one let alone two awards.

“I was very honoured to be linked to a group of people who have been working hard for the community for a long time,” Mr Cooke said.

“I believe in small communities, unless we volunteer in things we wouldn’t have anything and by doing it we appreciate the value of it.

“I have enjoyed volunteering in all the groups that I do and I will continue to do so.”
