THE Megabass Megabucks event at Lake Glenbawn on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 23 and 24 attracted 34 teams who competed in one of the richest bass events in the country.
The anglers were presented with lures at a dinner and briefing night before the event started.
Tim Morgan and Carl Jocumsen fished together for team Humminbird in the skins event which saw them win more than $7000 in prize money and podium finishes in all three sessions.
Team Humminbird came first in session one with their 4.01kg bag of four fish being the heaviest for the two day event.
During the milk run Morgan and Jocumsen took the opportunity to prefish separately, with one member of the team heading to the upper precincts of Glenbawn while the other concentrated on the lower half. Meeting up in the afternoon they collated their information and formulated a plan.
Heading off at daylight in the first session, the pair targeted schooled fish in 40ft past cemetery point with long casts and slow retrieves with the occasional twitch. The duo had soon filled their limit and headed off further up the dam to fish the trees, landing another 12 legal bass and upgrading several times before selecting their four fish to enter in the competition.
Second place for section one was won by Mark Reinbott and Mark Lennox from Tree Whiz whose bag of four fish weighed 3.33kg.
The pair from Tree Whiz fished submerged trees on the right hand side of Glenbawn dam past cemetery point. Pin pointing active fish the two Marks would catch one bass and then move to another nearby location hoping they could tempt the larger fish close to the timber.
With one bass left to capture to fill their bag, the pair found the fish shut down and headed out deeper to 70ft of water. However, using quarter ounce jigheads, they soon landed another legal and found that the bigger bass where located further out.
Third place in session one was won by Jody Vernon and Ben Pepperall from Secret Creek Lures. Their bag of four fish weighed 3.09kg.
Team Humminbird came first again in session two with their bag of four fish weighing 3.32kg.
Morgan and Jocumsen went straight to their spot where they had filled their bag in the morning. Utilising the same techniques they had three fish in the well before a strong southerly change came across the dam. Moving further up Lake Glenbawn to the left hand side they fished some trees for another bass before fishing became tough and the bite shut down.
Second place was one by Matthew Anderson and Ashley Sims from team Fish n Bits with their bag of four fish weighing 3.25kg. After a disappointing first session only landing a solitary bass, the Fish n Bits pair changed technique and targeted fallen submerged timber rather than standing timber in 40 to 50ft of water.
Jody Vernon and Ben Pepperall came third in session two with a catch of 3.02kg.
Fishing their chosen location near the dam wall the duo of Vernon and Pepperall where happy to get their four legals early in the session.
“Once the wind came through, it made the fishing tough and 2ft waves where crashing over the nose of the boat,” Vernon said.
Vernon and Pepperall came first in session three with a weight of 3.33kg.
The cashed up duo headed out in the final session to their location near the dam wall but found the bite slowed down once the sun rose on the water so they moved to fish the nearby bank
“I actually snagged the lure on a shrub as I let it sink, ripping it off the snag a bass hit it and at 1.08kg we where happy to get it in the live well,” said Pepperall.
With a Megabass rod up for grabs each session for the largest bass caught on a Megabass lure, the fish not only helped them win the session but proved to be a valuable incentive for the anglers.
Second place went to Stephen Almond and Greg Parkes from team G A Hayward Pty Ltd with a weight of 3.22kg.
The pair of Almond and Parkes had been close in the other sessions, but the final day proved to be their biggest bag and paid dividends. They fished in 50 to 60ft of water in Yellow Buoy Bay. Third place in session went to team Humminbird who had a weight of 3.16kg. For more information visit www.australianbass.com.au.
