MEMBERS of the Murrurundi community attended a service and parade to celebrate Beersheba Day on Saturday.
Organised by the Murrrundi Troop of the 12th Division of the Australian Light Horse, the event has been held in Murrurundi for about 15 years to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba which took place in Palestine on October 31, 1917.
This year the service marked the 92nd anniversary of the battle and featured retired colonel Eric Richardson who inspected the mounted contingent of the Murrurundi Light Horse.
Colonel Richardson selected Dennis Chael and his horse as the best mounted horse and trooper.
Colonel Richardson said he made his selection according to the horse which he felt would be best suited to a tour of the desert.
Colonel Richardson also made a commemorative speech about the battle and the horses that were used in it.
The story of the battle was told by master of ceremonies councillor Michael Johnsen while Canon Brian Gibb recited the commemorative service prayer, led The Recessional, and the Benediction.
The event finished with a luncheon at the Murrurundi Bowling Club.
