Messara prepares for waiting game

02 Feb, 2012 02:39 PM
Paul Messara is preparing to play a waiting game with the regally bred New Wave following his easy win in the Henrythenavigator@Coolmore Maiden (1600m) last Monday.

“He is going to make a nice stayer but probably not for another six months, as a four year old or perhaps even longer as a five year old,” Messara said.

“We left him a colt because he is so well bred and we wanted to wait and see how he developed but I think it is time he was gelded.”

New Wave, ridden by Christian Reith was trapped wide early but kept pushing forward and was eventually able to get the lead then went on with the job to score by five lengths.

It was his third run back from a spell and he was always the favourite in the ring on the strength of his fifth, beaten less than a length, at Kembla Grange nine days earlier.

New Wave is by Redoute’s Choice from the imported Oceanette, a winner of two races in Japan.

Scone's next meeting on Monday, February 13, will feature the first of the three HTBA Two Year Old races leading in to the $100,000 Inglis Two Year Old Challenge on Scone cup day, May 18.

The other two races in the series are on March 27 and April 20.

Prize money for each of the three two year old races has been increased to $15,000, the BOBS bonus is $10,000 while there is another $10,000 bonus from the HTBA if the winner is a graduate of the Scone yearling sale.

If the first HTBA bonus is not won it is then split and becomes $15,000 for the next two races.

If it is not won a second time it increases to $30,000 for the final race in the series.

Sydney jockey Christian Reith, a regular at Scone, was again the dominant jockey last Monday with a winning treble.

Reith won the Henrythenavigagtor@Coolmore Maiden (1600m) on New Wave, scored a last stride win on the “Pud” Davies trained Sandrio in the HTBA 2YO Race Series Benchmark 65 (1600m) and lifted the spirits of Phil Anderson in scoring on Winning review.

Six weeks ago Newcastle based Anderson was seriously ill with pneumonia, brought on by the lung cancer he has been battling for some time.

Last Monday he was on top of the world when Winning Review proved far too good for her rivals to win the Schweppes/Inland Distribut-ors Class Two (1300m) and give Christian Reith the third leg of his treble.

“I feel terrific,” Anderson said after the win.

“The doctors are really happy with me and the cancer seems to be under control and this mare is really starting to fire.

“I think she is capable of winning a race in town during the winter but in the meantime we will try and find another suitable race for her against her own class.”

Anderson praised Reith for his ride after the outsider Ultradane took on Winning Review for the lead.

Reith was content to ease back and let Ultradane open up a break of several lengths.

“It is good to see a jockey use his head and let her settle.”

The Cessnock based Davies has always had an opinion of Sandrio but the five year old exceeded even his expectations when he appeared beaten yet came again to win.

“I have always had a big opinion of this horse but that was a super win and what’s more he was one run short of his top,” Davies said.

“I have always believed that this horse will win middle distances races in Sydney and we might have to head there now.”

Reith sent Sandrio straight to the lead, which was the pattern for much of the day and stayed there.

“The owner has always wanted me to lead with him so I told Christian the horse was one run short but to take his chances in the small field and make them catch him.”

The Greg Bennett trained In Nomine Patri will resume racing shortly and hopefully return to the promise he showed two preparations ago.

In late 2010 the horse won successive races at Scone then ran a close and luckless second at Newcastle before being spelled.

He failed in two starts at his next preparation but bone chips were found in one knee, they were removed and he was given a long spell.

Last Monday In Nomine Patri finished sixth, beaten only two and a half lengths, in a trial at Scone behind stable mate Shocking Behaviour.

It’s an ordinary name but Shocking Behaviour could be one to keep an eye on when this Strada filly makes her debut.
