The Scone Touch Football Association was very well represented at the Peter Wilson Memorial Carnival at Nelson Bay last weekend with four teams competing.
It was the first year Scone has sent a girls team to the carnival, with under 10, under 12 and under 14 boys also attending.
Each team played four games in their pool against very well drilled teams from much larger associations.
The under 12 boys, who have been playing together for four years, got through to the semi finals by beating Central Coast 4-3 in a very exciting game.
They then had to play an extremely fast Newcastle team who had twice as many substitutes as Scone, and were relentless in attack.
The boys played well but were not able to match Newcastle’s use of the field.
The under 10s team, in their first time playing together as a team, played some great touch football and made it into the quarter finals.
They improved enormously over the course of the weekend but were not able to get through the Berkeley Vale defence.
Berkeley Vale won 4-0 which meant the Scone team finished sixth overall out of 13 teams – a fantastic effort.
The under 14s, who had not trained together as a team prior to the carnival, played some exciting touch football to record a couple of losses and two high scoring draws.
Coach Darryl Rando said he was impressed by how the team improved with each game and how quickly they started to work together as a team.
Ross Duggan, coach of the under 12 girls team, did a great job of motivating the girls and teaching them how touch football is played at this level.
The team kept improving with each game, and smiled their way through the weekend.
A big thankyou to the coaches mentioned, and also to Henry Wicks and Joel Harrison who coached the under 12 boys team.
Scone also sent five referees to the carnival.
Thank you to Dave Casson, Dave Macpherson, Nikki Hollingsworth, Bailey Wooden and Logan Watts for refereeing and supporting the teams.
Lastly Scone Touch Football Association would like to thank all the parents who gave up their weekend to transport players and support the four teams, always displaying great sportsmanship.
