Last weekend the Scone Brumbies took on the Gunnedah Red Devils at Brumby Park.
The action was in all three grades and once again the joint looked a picture and the pitch ripe for some free flowing running rugby.
First into the fray were the Scone Brumby U19 Colts against a giant pack of Red Devils from Gunnedah.
It was in this highly entertaining game played by two highly committed and competent teams.
Brumbies delighted their coach Frank Brownlea with the way they finished off their opponents to the tune of 48-12 to run out convincing victors. Players to standout were Richard Thew, Jeb Hardy, Will Carrigan and Ben Ham.
Next up it was the Scone Brumbies 2nd XV into the action against a resurgent Gunnedah Red Devils team.
Both teams are in a tussle to figure in the top five and knew a victory would certainly help. Coach Raz Wilson had the time tuned up just right and the team responded accordingly. The performance ranked as one of the most pleasing of the season so far as the Brumbies were able to post a score with some enterprising rugby, but did not forget their dedication to the job of defense.
The final score saw Scone prevail to the tune of 32-12. Standout players were Jeb Hardy, Kurt Ruming, Ben McRae and Evan Geary.
The main event for the day saw The Belmore Hotel Scone Brumbies 1st XV take on Gunndah Red Devils and looking to post their first points of the season. Coach Matt Ryan had some tough decisions to make during the break in the competition, but he made them and had the team make a commitment tough out the rest of the season and play for each other.
On the other hand the Red Devils after having one of their worst seasons last year have regrouped and been competitive in most of the games they have contested this year.
But what panned out was not how it was supposed to be scripted. The Scone Brumbies stood up to a man and took it to the more fancied and bigger opponents. Leading for most of the game it was only with five minutes left on the clock that the Red Devils managed to drive a dagger through the hearts of the Scone Brumbies and their supporters.
In a performance that oozed pride and passion the unlucky Brumbies went down narrowly to the tune of 24-20.
In a performance that all players stood up to be counted there were players that stood out and Mick Fitzgerald, Johnno Walsh, Dan Clydesdale and Joel Harrison were those.
During the week in Newcastle the Hunter Opens Primary School trials were held and Scone was ably represented by some keen up and coming young Scone Brumbies. Mustered together by the time and effort of Darren Saunders in particularly, the local faired quite well on the day and by days end managed to get Luke Porter (No.8), Jackson Anshaw (Fly Half) and James Grant (Half Back) named in the 30 man train-on squad to contest the open schools trials at Newcastle in July.
This weekend action is at the home of rugby in the Hunter – Brumby Park with the Scone Brumbies taking on the Tamworth Pirates in all three grades.
Once again all facilities will be on offer to all members and their guests and all people that are up for an entertaining afternoon of running rugby whilst enjoying one and others company. This weekend also sees the reunion of the triumphant 1989 Scone Brumbies team that took on and concurred the might that was the Singleton Bulls. On that day the Brumbies prevailed to the tune of 15-14 and to this day stands as one of the most important victories in the history of the club. 20 years down the track they will gather and relive past glories whilst watching the present and future talent of the club and all are welcome to join them and the club on a day that is sure to be one not to miss.
The Scone Advocate received a message for John Walsh (Irish John) last week.
“Happy birthday Gooby (his nickname in Ireland),” from all in Borrisoleigh.
