THE SCONE ADVOCATE featured an article from a council press release, with a nice photo of the planted roundabout, Campbells Corner, and the great tree on Thursday, February 18.
It said the Committee (Works and Tech. Services) calls on the community to support the traffic light proposal.
But at the Meeting, February 9, there was a struggle, not the calm unanimity that “calls on the community.” Its “preference” was in fact, quite split.
The release however said the committee chose one, and the Scone Chamber of Commerce the other. It left unmentioned the huge public outcry and the hundreds of signatories. Eh?
The release alleged there had been “some incorrect statements circulating within the community regarding the two options.”
But I heard nothing of that in the relevant Committee Meeting.
Maybe committee members could tell us in the press about the statements, where they originated and why they are wrong.
The release said “ ..lights phasing .. is developed to minimise interruptions to traffic.. in Kelly St.” (That surely has to imply maximised interruptions to pedestrians?) But no figures are quoted.
Actual time-phase information would have been useful before the voting.
We all want to know the standard waiting time for each of the cross roads.
Since it totals to 24/7, it is of interest.
Do we wait one and two minutes, or two and four minutes?
How many highway stops during each train, for us to cross?
There might be say, 400 traffic stops a day with long pedestrian waits, or 800 with shorter waits.
Will long waits send us anywhere but the lights, to cross?
If minimising interruption to highway traffic is so important, then why choose to stop it, often for nothing, hundreds of times a day?
