 Pedestrians will ignore

Pedestrians will ignore

03 Mar, 2010 03:55 PM
THE Upper Hunter Shire’s narrow decision to support the installation of traffic lights in Scone is very disappointing as the opinion of their constituents has been totally disregarded by five of our elected representatives.

The argument that lights are required for safety reasons is a fallacy. At present, motorists use the roundabout to cross town or enter the highway safely. Traffic lights will be avoided in preference to alternate, more dangerous routes.

For example, travelling to Sydney via Cessnock many motorists, ourselves included, detour via Victoria St to avoid the lights.

The same applies to pedestrians who cross mid-block to avoid “Don’t Walk” signs, for example in Muswellbrook.

Traffic in Main St will become very heavy as drivers on seeing a red light ahead, will divert to Main St.

Don’t be surprised if regular travellers will divert regardless of the situation at the lights.

Lights are a health hazard – “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
