 People will still cross mid-block

People will still cross mid-block

11 Mar, 2010 09:18 AM
THE main reason given by the councillors who voted for the installation of traffic lights has been listed as safety for pedestrians. That is a total nonsense because the reality of the pedestrian use of the proposed traffic lights will be very unsafe. Very few people who wish to cross Kelly St at places north of Farrams, which includes a very busy chemist shop, coffee shop and hair dresser among others, will walk all the way down to Post Office corner to stand and wait for pedestrian signals to cross then walk back up to their target shop.

The same applies to people coming from south of Kelly St to the paper shop, or places like two popular food shops and numerous others.

People are going to wait until the lights stop the north and south traffic moving up and down the highway and then slip across the road between the traffic. The only difference from that scenario and now is the trucks will be stopped. It will still be dangerous but preferable to walking long distances to stand around waiting for minutes at a time for some lights.

By crossing mid block pedestrians are going to avoid being involved in the more numerous vehicle accidents that occur at traffic lights. (documented data roundabouts v traffic lights).

May those five councillors enjoy their final few months on the council as the majority of Scone voters may not forget this decision come voting time.

Typical of council takes no notice of residents wishes. Just watch councils next move, will be a fence down the centre of the gardens to herd people to the lights & crossing
