 Water concerns Bunnan residents

Water concerns Bunnan residents

05 May, 2011 12:03 PM
The initial stages of drilling for coal seam gas are about to begin on ‘Grampian Hills’, near Bunnan.

As residents of the area and members of the Save Bunnan committee, we are very concerned that no action has been taken to declare a moratorium on such a potentially hazardous activity.

The information provided by Santos at a public meeting did nothing to allay our fears.

The entire water supply for our area and the whole valley is at risk, apart from the health and well being of all residents.

This insidious exploration must be stopped before the area looks like the barren wastelands of the USA, where aquifers have been irreparably damaged.

It is true that the whole water supply, as well the health and wellbeing of residents is at risk.

This is potentially the biggest environmental disaster this country has ever seen.

Coal seam produced water is naturally laden with an array of hazardous substances, such as mercury, cyanide, arsenic, cadmium, nickel, chromium VI, lead, BTEX and radioactive elements.

This is before any drilling or fracturing compounds are used.

This submission focuses on this issue, with reference to government and academic documents: http://lockthegate.org.au/documents/doc-308-coal---gas-scoping-strategy-submission---coal-seam-produced-water.pdf
