With competitors from schools across the Upper Hunter, Coolah, Ellalong and as far away as Bourke the competition was fierce and sportsmanship exemplary.
Merriwa Central School horse sports coordinator Kellie Porter said this was the seventh year the school had hosted the horse sports event.
“The day ran great with a few minor issues but with the help of our fantastic committee all the problems were sorted and the day ran very smoothly,” she said.
“It’s such a great event, and I love seeing the smiles on the faces of all our competitors from tiny six-year-olds to teens and our 16 years and over riders.”
Ms Porter said hosting horse sports was important for youth across the community.
“We have many talented riders within the Hunter Valley and beyond and its very satisfying to be able to run such an event to showcase our students talents.
“We also run the event to promote our school, our equestrian team and to raise money for our school,” Ms Porter said.
“It also gives students the opportunity to represent their school in their chosen field,” she said.
Two local schools took home top honours with Merriwa Central School the highest point scoring high school and St Joseph’s Merriwa the highest point scoring primary school.
