As a result, research into mental health and increased understanding of it is becoming even more important.
The Australian Rotary Health Foundation supports mental health research and next month will host ‘Hat Day’ across the nation.
Rotary Club of Scone president Margaret Clarke said the club will also support the initiative with ‘Scone Hat Day’ and invites all local businesses and organisations to be involved.
“We are encouraging everyone in Scone to wear a hat on Friday, October 10 and make a donation to the foundation.
“Organisations might like to do something different like host a morning tea or lunch, or have a theme for their Hat Day such as wear a miners hat, Christmas hat, vintage hat although any old hat will do,” Mrs Clarke said.
The Upper Hunter Youth Council is encouraging all young people in Scone to be involved in this event because increasingly, young people are being impacted by mental health issues.
“It is really important that we know about mental health,” Youth Council member Kirsten Smith said.
“We need to know that it is part of life, but more importantly how to get help.”
Youth Council member Lachlan White from Scone High School agreed raising mental health awareness is important.
“It is really important that if one of our friends is feeling down that we know how to help them and where they can get help.
“So, our school will be supporting the Rotary Club of Scone in their fundraising efforts on October 10.”
