One such gentleman who will unleash his revamped Café Tracker and take part in the charity ride is Scone’s Steve Pratley.
Mr Pratley will join a group of about 50 riders to tour Newcastle and Carrington next Sunday, September 28 to raise awareness and funds for the cause.
His group ‘Customs and Cafes Newcastle’ will conclude their ride at the Lass O’ Gowrie hotel in Wickham.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is a worldwide initiative based on the café bike culture for classic styled motorcycles that has grown rapidly since its inception just two years ago.
The aim of the ride is to help the cause of seeking a cure for prostate cancer and 244 rides across 56 countries, including several in Australia, are all working together to help achieve this aim.
Everything from classics, café racers, bobbers, trackers, customs, modern classics, classic scooters and undefinable 2/3 wheeled machines have taken part in past years.
Founded in 2012 and inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit, it was decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles.
Last year more than 11,000 riders took part from 145 cities around the world to raise more than $277,000 for prostate cancer research, however this years’ goal is to raise $1,110,421 and the riders are currently at $628,913.
Mr Pratley said it wasn’t so much about the ride, but about everyone raising funds for the cause and getting together in vintage gentleman style.
To date he has raised $2200 just through his own friend network, which is much more than the $500 goal he set.
Mr Pratley thanked everyone for their generosity as he sent out text messages to all his friends and within three hours he had $1000 and by the end of the day he had $2000.
“The response was awesome, especially from men as obviously it is close to home,” he said.
Mr Pratley said he believes it is important to contribute to the cause and help fund research into prostate cancer.
“It’s all about creating awareness and raising money.”
All funds raised will be distributed to the Prostate Cancer Foundation in Australia, the UK and USA.
