Around 15 Merriwa Central School year 9 and 10 students did just that last Thursday to say a hearty ‘thankyou’ by cooking a hearty breakfast for members of the community that have helped the school over the past year.
Merriwa Central School hospitality teacher Aaron Creamer said he was very proud of the exemplary effort the students put into preparing and serving the breakfast.
“It’s pretty daunting for a 15 or 16-year-old to cook for so many adults, but they all took it in their stride.
“To be motivated to get up and be at school by 6am is also a great credit to them.
“I think being able to cook for the community has helped boost student confidence and given them an opportunity to show off their skills in the kitchen,” Mr Creamer said.
With pancakes, potato fritters, beans, bacon and scrambled eggs on the menu, there was a little talking amongst the guests, but a lot of contented eating.
Year 12 student Sean Edens-Rosa said hospitality was his favourite subject at school and he hoped to take it beyond the classroom next year.
“I love cooking and have been fortunate to get a traineeship this year with the Merriwa RSL in the kitchen.
“I’d like to be a chef and hope to join the navy as an apprentice next year.
“The hospitality course at school is great, not just because you get to eat but you learn how to cook for yourself and your family and friends.
“It’s something all of us have to do – eat – but you can also turn it into a career,” he said.
Hospitality is currently the most popular elective at the school, and with the delicious smells and creations coming from the newly built commercial kitchen, it’s no wonder why.
