Fifty-two primary and secondary students attended a Junior Golf Gala Day provided by Scone Golf Club as part of Play Golf Week.
The day was supported by Golf Australia and Jack Newton Junior Golf with Golf Professional Mark Ingrey sharing his skills and knowledge through individual coaching, demonstration shots and trick shots.
The students came from Scone High School, St Joseph’s Aberdeen, Scone Public, Ellerston Public and Blandford Public Schools.
Students from these schools have all been involved in clinics with the club throughout the year as part of its junior golf coaching program.
Participants enjoyed a great day on and off the course learning new skills and witnessing some highlights such as how to hit left handed shots with a right handed golf club, which really impressed them.
Scone Golf Club junior golf coordinator Gordon Halliday was joined by trained coach Sue Watts and other lady members to organise and facilitate the day.
Halliday said all the children seemed to enjoy the gala day and they enjoyed having them, as it is really rewarding to see the children out on the course having fun and using the skills they learnt throughout the year.
“We had really good cooperation from the schools, which made the whole thing possible,” he said.
Halliday said the overall aim of the program is to encourage golf as a sport for children and they hope some of the students will pick it up.
He said a lot of sporting skills, life skills and good discipline come from golf, and the students are at the right age to join the sport.
“We hope to run the program again next year,” he said.
Play Golf Week will wrap up this weekend with a family day of fun including putt-putt golf, JNG golf activities, target golf and putting competitions with a barbecue and more.
