The Upper Hunter has been lucky enough to receive a wonderful amount of rain of late.
Last week in Merriwa we received 11.8 millimetres which has made the countryside a luscious shade of green – keep it coming.
Australia Day
The shire is extremely lucky to have talented individuals as our Australia Day ambassadors at each event.
Merriwa is hosting John Clarke, ABC Radio presenter from Newcastle, Murrurundi is hosting Brad Farmer, Founder of Surfrider Foundation and National Ocean Care Day and Scone and Aberdeen are hosting Sarah Garnett, Founder of the Benjamin Andrew Footpath Library.
I cannot wait to hear the presentations and especially the school achievement awards for creative arts and excellence.
Asbestos awareness
The Upper Hunter Shire Council is urging everyone to be aware of the dangers of asbestos around the home.
A conservative estimate is that one in three homes in Australia contains asbestos.
Disturbed asbestos fibres can be released into the air and when inhaled, can cause life-threatening diseases.
Asbestos that has been secured in sealed packaging can be disposed of at the Merriwa or Scone Waste Depots, however you must advise the depot in advance by visiting or by contacting the council on 6540 1100.
Presentation nights
I have been lucky enough to be invited to quite a few school presentation nights to wrap up this year.
This week I have attended St Joseph’s in Merriwa and Merriwa Central.
I love attending these events to see what the children of this wonderful shire have been working towards for the year.
Driver Reviver
Each holiday season up to 220 Driver Reviver sites open right across Australia.
These are supported by volunteers from a range of regional community groups.
Driver Reviver sites are an ideal place to take a break on a long journey.
They offer a free cup of hot Bushells tea, coffee, an Arnotts biscuit and most importantly, a chance to revive so you reach your destination safe and sound.
Make the Driver Reviver your top stop these holidays to keep the roads safe.
To find a rest stop, visit www.driverreviver.com.au.
Festive season
Well the festive season has come around quite fast this year.
I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
