The 12-year-old Scone rider competed in the Equestrian Australia National Show Horse Championships and surprised himself by taking out champion stakes.
A successful competitor in pony club and show events, the youngster competed against the other top qualifiers in his age group - the 12 years and under division, who were all females.
The championships were held at Werribee National Equestrian Centre in Victoria earlier this month where the top two qualifiers from each state, as well as New Zealand, compete for the Australasian titles.
Kelly qualified for the event in March when he was successful at the Equestrian Australia NSW Horse of the Year event.
After an amazing workout on ‘Lawlington Park Rendition’ – a chestnut Galloway - Kelly impressed all three judges to win the event and be the only rider to score points under all of the judges.
Kelly said the 2500 kilometre round trip was well worth the time, effort and energy as he was really pleased with his win after entering the event focused and determined to succeed.
“I was really excited to be selected to compete as part of the NSW team, but to come away with the win was truly amazing and something I will never forget,” he said.
The NSW team was also awarded the team cup for the overall point score winners, which Kelly was also very proud of.
