The extravagant display of the role Murrurundi and neighbouring district’s residents played in the First World War was appreciated firsthand by Member for Hunter Joel Fitzgibbon when he visited the society’s museum hall last week.
The display, which is the hard work of about 20 dedicated volunteers, now stands proud in the back showcase area of the society’s church hall in Mayne Street, Murrurundi.
It is a product of a $10,270 Anzac Centenary Grant that Mr Fitzgibbon was instrumental in the society gaining.
Features of the display include numerous storyboards which explain the involvement of various people, with several others planned to pop up in coming months including a board featuring the lighthorse.
The society was one of five organisations in the Hunter to receive funding under the ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Program, alongside the Aberdeen RSL Sub-branch and Murrurundi and District Arts Council’s grant of $9910 to launch and promote an online program – ‘Honouring Anzacs within the Local Classroom and Community’.
Mr Fitzgibbon said it was fantastic to visit Murrurundi and the society and get an appreciation first hand of what the group has achieved.
“It’s also nice to be able to personally thank the group for doing their bit to raise the consciousness of what people did all those years ago,” he said.
“This exhibition is a big deal for Murrurundi and for two organisations in town to obtain $20,000 to commemorate Anzac is a great thing.”
The First World War exhibition will be displayed for the length of the Anzac Centenary celebrations.
