Daniel Hogan was one of several Upper Hunter students to win a berth on the Young Endeavour late last year.
“I was very sea sick for the first three days,” Daniel said.
“The vessel had just undergone a complete refit, so our voyage was mostly a shakedown to test the sails and other repairs were holding.
“While on board, the crew told us about an upcoming world voyage.
“On the second last day we were sailing around Sydney Harbour and I was fortunate enough to climb the foremast while we sailed under Sydney Harbour Bridge.
“It was an amazing experience and it was at that moment I knew I wanted to apply for the world voyage as soon as I got back home.”
And the rest, they say is history.
Daniel completed and lodged his application for the epic 60 day world voyage – and was over the mast – literally, when he found out his application had been successful.
“The 10 day voyage was a real challenge and showed me I can challenge myself and succeed.
“If I only get sea sick on the first three days next trip, at least I will have the next 57 days to enjoy myself,” he said.
With nine voyages in the tour, Daniel will sail in the sixth Voyage from Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro from August 21 to October 22.
Currently in his third year of agriculture and law at the University of New England, Daniel said he had a lot of fundraising to do between now and August.
“I think I’ll be doing a lot of busking around Armidale and Merriwa to save the $10,000 I need for the trip,” he said.
“It’s a lot of money but I’m sure it will be an experience of a life time.”
