Playgrounds in the Upper Hunter have undergone a sun safety facelift with the Upper Hunter Shire Council installing shade sails over the play equipment at Elizabeth Park in Scone and Wilson Memorial Oval in Murrurundi.
The shade sails not only provide 90 percent UV protection for young and not so young skin, they keep the play equipment cooler.
The council funded the cost of the two structures which was a total of $80,000 including $20,000 contributed from the funds raised by the 2013 Scone Rural Women’s Gathering.
Hunter Road works
The first and second stage of the Hunter Road resealing programme is nearing completion. It is important to note that all of these projects have two coats of seal with the first coat applied after the construction of the road surface and the second at a later date (generally six to 12 months).
This allows time for any issues, such as soft spots, to be addressed before the final seal is applied.
For example, Oratora Road was reconstructed last year and will have the second coat of seal in the coming weeks.
Moonan cutting
Yes this is going to happen.
There are a couple of stages to this project as well.
Tenders have been received for the first stage, which is to stabilise the river bank.
The plan for the second stage is to take some of the rock face away, providing much greater visibility for road users through the cutting.
This project has been hanging around for some time, so I am pleased to see it progressed finally.
It is important though that it is constructed properly once and once only.
Scone saleyards
The committee of the saleyards along with producers and agents met again last week to discuss the selling format of the Scone Fat Sale held on Tuesdays.
The committee decided to trial another format, which is to sell bulls and suspect cattle in the outside lanes followed by the export cattle under the covered area and then continue the local trade through the ring.
These decisions have been discussed at length and we have to come up with a format that suits the majority of people including the agents, buyers and the vendors.
Scone has a great selling complex and we have to make sure we stay competitive with other saleyards in the state, be proud of what we have and work towards making it even bigger and better.
The Scone saleyards are rated at number nine in NSW with approximately 60,000 head of cattle sold per year.
Big wins for council
There have been some big wins for the council in regards to funding this month.
All of these grants will certainly be welcomed by the Upper Hunter Shire and the communities that are involved:

Scone Horse Trials
The Scone Horse Trials will be held this Saturday and Sunday, which is the first of two annual events for the group.
This event is one of the largest events on the NSW Horse Trial calendar with over 400 competitors, attracting top class athletes from all over NSW and Queensland.
This event will be held on the ‘Broomfield’ property at Gundy.
The Upper Hunter Shire Council is again proud to be able to assist the committee with some ground preparation work.
