And now there will be - and lot’s of it – down at the Merriwa tennis courts.
A long term project of the Merriwa Tennis Club, president Robert Smith said he was ‘beaming’ at the prospect of new lights in the near future.
“We have been fundraising and applying for grants to replace the old lights for almost 10 years.
“1988 was the last time any significant funds were spent on the courts, so both the lights and courts have fallen into major disrepair,” he said.
“The new lights will not only provide brighter light, but are a lot more energy efficient.
“It will be great to finally be able to flick the light switch on over the courts.”
The club successfully raised $5000 through various fundraising activities and were awarded a $13,500 grant last week from the NSW Sport Facility Program.
The club are now awaiting confirmation from the Upper Hunter Shire Council to provide the additional in kind and financial support required to complete the $27,500 upgrade.
Smith said once the light replacement project was completed, the club would focus their fundraising attention towards upgrading the court surfaces.
In the meantime the club plans to host more evening training and social tennis tournaments.
Other facilities set to receive an upgrade are the amenities block at the Merriwa Sports Oval which received $18,226 from the NSW Sport Facility Program this month.
