With good numbers at training for the past number of weeks, coach Anthony Kent was full of enthusiasm and confidence ahead of what would be a tough Singleton side.
This season Singleton have been promoted to the premier division in the Newcastle competition, so Kent knew he would have his work cut out.
Scone started into the wind in the first half and this was a telling factor as Scone found it hard to play out of their own half for large periods.
During this period of prolonged pressure the Brumby defence stood strong to everything Singleton had to throw at them.
Scone then started to build some pressure of their own and worked their way up the paddock through some good phase play and strong running from inside centre Shaun Trewin.
Singleton capitalised on some handling errors to rack up two quick tries, but Scone bounced back with some excellent scores of their own.
Kent found a hole in the midfield and after a 20 metre dash found support from Paul McTaggart to eventually find himself having to dive over the line for Scone’s first try.
This must have dazed Singleton as from the resulting kick off, after some silky soccer skills, break away Daniel Burt put Zac Rahn down the sideline to beat the last defender with an excellent step back inside to score his first try of the season.
As time went on Scone really started to stamp their authority on the game and it was very encouraging to see some of the younger players step up to the mark with Alex Thwait-Wright and Jake Davidson putting in strong performances.
Eventually Scone got the winning try after some excellent foot work from Richard Thew inside his own half and getting Josh Moore over the line for his first try as a Brumby.
All in all this was a very positive performance from Scone, but there is a lot of work to do before the season kicks off on Saturday, April 11.
All new players are encouraged to come to training on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6pm.
The next pre-season game is tomorrow night against Muswellbrook in the Equilaw Cup.
Kick off is at 6.30pm at Brumby Park.
