A special celebration was held to recognise the 75th birthday since the club first formed back in 1940.
Male bowlers travelled from all clubs within the Upper Hunter district to take part in the day with a total of 82 bowlers and six distinguished guests including Bowls NSW vice president Lyle Keats and his wife Fay, Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen and his wife Zenda, Upper Hunter District president and Scone Men’s Bowling Club life member Brian Cone, Upper Hunter Women’s Bowls president Wendy McKenzie and Scone Women’s Bowling Club president Pauline Beckingham.
The 22 teams enjoyed a morning of 15 ends of bowls before a beautiful lunch and the official speeches of the day.
Once the cake was cut, it was back out to the green for more fun, followed by a lovely High Tea.
Scone Men’s Bowling Club president Bruce Johnstone said he was ecstatic with the turn out and how the day went off.
He said he was very impressed with the speech given by the Bowls NSW vice president Lyle Keats, on the complete history of the club, which he had memorised for the occasion.
The Scone Men’s Bowling Club first formed in 1940 under the presidency of Sir Alister McMullin.
It was officially opened on Anzac Day, however its earliest history dates back to December 3, 1931 when a meeting of interested citizens planted the original seed for club formation.
The first home of the Scone Bowling Club was established in April 1939 when a block was leased from the Scone Municipal Council on the corner of Kelly and Susan Streets, where the first green was laid.
The lawn was officially opened by the mayor of Scone Alderman Joughin on April 25, 1940.
In November 1967 the new clubhouse and greens on Gundy Road were officially opened by the state president Ted Downie and it has since had four extensions in 1970, 1973, 1976 and 1987.
Two greens are named after two of the longest serving presidents of the club – the late Mervyn Boniface, who served 44 years as a director and 17 years as president, and the late Edward (Ted) Stafford who served 29 years as a director and eight as president.
The winner on the day was Scone Bowling Club for hosting a great day of fun and friendship.
