The First Grade game ended with a 28 all result however Scone managed six tries to the opposition’s five.
The score fluctuated during both halves, with scores being locked 18 all at half time.
Scone conceded a very early converted try and it was not until the 15th minute when Captain Daniel Ritter finished off great lead up work to score near the posts, which was converted by Jarrod Wicks. Two tries in quick succession to Jessie Kilroy and Justin Apthorpe gave Scone the lead 14 to 6.
Singleton struck back soon after for a converted try, however Kilroy picked up his second to advance the score to 18 to 12.
That looked like the likely half time score, but Singleton capitalised on a Scone mistake to score and convert to even up the scores at half time.
The second half started similarly to the first with Jake Hourn crossing for his second for Singleton and an 18 to 22 score.
Captain Ritter suffered from some “friendly fire” when a head clash with a team mate resulted in a nasty gash, forcing him from the field.
Singleton made the most of this and scored another try, which was converted and provided a 10 point advantage.
The combination of a sin bin to a Singleton player and the return of inspirational Ritter sparked the Scone team into action.
Tim Smith crossed the line reducing the difference to four after a Wicks conversion.
Joel Harrison then made the most of a Apthorpe kick scoring a spectacular try with minutes to go. Unfortunately, Wicks could not add the extras from the side line and tense final minutes resulted in a drawn result.
The Reserve Grade match was a clash of the competition leaders with the home team being too good on the day.
Scone got off to a strong start with Charles Mill crossing the line for Jake Watts to convert and to take the lead after seven minutes.
That was to be the end of the scoring for the first half for Scone however with Singleton managing to mount plenty of pressure throughout to score three tries and a half time score of 6 to 16.
It looked like the tables would turn in the second half with tries to Kyle Wilcher and Mill’s second, which brought the score to 14 to 16 after Watts converted one.
An error from the kick off led to a converted try for Singleton and another mistake resulted in a further try and a 14 to 26 score.
A glimmer of hope following Mill’s third try for the day was dispelled when Singleton sealed their victory with a further converted try to take the final score to 32 to 16.
The Ladies League Tag team continued their winning way with a dominant 26 to 8 score over their opponents.
Early possession and repeat sets saw Abbey van Balen cross for the first try within the first 10 minutes.
Charmaine Bloomfield added the extras for an early 6 nil lead.
Nicky Schliffke crossed for her first for the season soon after bringing the score to 10 nil.
There were no surprises when Captain Sofie Casson found her way to the line thereafter, however Singleton crossed before half time for a 16 to 4 score line at half time.
There was nothing between the two teams for a prolonged period in the second half and it was Singleton who applied the pressure with a try resulting.
At 16 to 8, the Scone girls responded and it was Maddy Adams finding her way to the line soon after which, after a Bloomfield conversion, provided the extra buffer for Scone.
Captain Casson crossed for her second with only minutes remaining and securing a well-deserved victory, which leaves the team undefeated so far in the competition.
This Sunday sees a return to Scone Park for all teams, taking on Denman in all grades except the Under 18s who will be up against Singleton again.
The Ladies League Tag commences at 10.15am with First Grade taking the field for a 2pm kick off.
Supporters are encouraged to get to the grounds early to cheer on all the teams for what should be a very good day of rugby league.
