The team representing the Hunter Valley Local Area Command took on the Oxley Cods – police from Tamworth, Gunnedah, Quirindi and Manilla in the match as a major fundraiser for youngster Jordan Lane-Robb who was severely hurt in a rodeo accident last year leaving him a quadriplegic.
The Hunter Valley Broncos Police Rugby League Football Club were fortunate to gain support from locals Saunders Motor Group, who were proud and privileged to be able to support such an important cause.
The annual police rugby league match is the third instalment of the initiative and is strongly supported by officers from Scone, Muswellbrook, Singleton and Branxton.
By all accounts it was a hard fought match complimented with the ever present niggle and fire police football matches are renowned for, however it was the Cods who came out the winners with a final score of 42 to 22.
The Oxley Cods were well represented with a number of former NSW Country representatives, including ex NRL player Detective Sergeant Jason Darcy.
To date, the sports initiative has raised more than $30,000 for the NSW Police Legacy, the Rise for Alex Fund and $9000 for this year’s appeal for Jordan.
The match was very close to the heart as the benefactor, Jordan, is the son of Hunter Valley Bronco player, Senior Constable Christopher Lane.
The Broncos thanked all their sponsors.
Broncos coach, Muswellbrook Senior Constable Chris Dengate said the support they have in the community as a whole is very humbling.
“This year we even had Mick Johnsen (local state MP) travel up and address the boys before the match,” he said.
Plans are underway to have next year’s match in Scone.
Despite the fact the score card reads three nil in Oxley’s favour, the Broncos team are looking forward to next year’s match.
“Next year they’re in our house,” Dengate said.
