The Scone Junior Rugby League super mini teams continued their round robin series with some pleasing rugby league played, especially by the ‘Super Sixers’ who never fail to entertain the crowd.
The first team to hit finals was a major semi final clash between the Under 10s teams Scone White and Scone Blue.
This is an amazing result to see both Scone teams finish one and two, and is a credit to the coaches Aaron Watts and Brett Hails.
The White’s skipped to an early lead but after a stirring half time speech from Brett - the Blue’s surged back in the second half and now head to the final full of confidence.
The Under 11s was also another Scone affair with Scone Blues in the major against last year’s grand finalist Aberdeen, and the White’s in the minor semi against Singleton.
The Blues booked themselves a grand final spot after a torrid lead up with injuries and the like.
They never saw the lead until after the bell after Junah Warden slipped over the line to lock the scores up and had to convert after the final siren had sounded.
With everyone holding their breath Warden calmly slotted it over for an 18 to 16 victory.
With the confidence high after watching the Blues, the Whites came out firing and held out a fast finishing Singleton to score a convincing victory.
This will now see them lock horns with Aberdeen in the finals this week at Denman.
This is the second year in a row our sides have finished in the finals with Aberdeen, so I’m sure we will see stars of the future out of this grade.
The Jake Watts coached Under 13s were knocked off in their minor semi against Valentine in the division one game, but were far from disgraced.
This game was a ripper with big hits, and no self-preservation allowed with both teams keen to get an advantage.
With Scone missing their hard hitting Bailey Miller, you could have thought it would be an easy day for Valentine but the Thoroughbred boys dug deep and pushed them right to fulltime.
Big games from Jack Gunton and Ashton Reichel in the forwards and a tireless effort from Richard Riley at the back – these boys can hold their heads high in their first crack at division one.
The Tony Saunders coached Under 14s went down in a tight battle 22 to 16 in their major semi.
They have the luxury of a second bite for a grand final spot, but need to re-group at training and get back to their no nonsense approach to rugby league.
These boys are chasing back to back premierships and will give this comp a real shake on their day.
The Codie McCarthy and Jake Bailey coached Under 15s also won their minor semi in an absolute nail biter winning 21to 20 in golden point.
After skipping away to an early lead they lost their way in the middle part of the game, but never one to give up snuck home in golden point to book a place in this week’s final.
Hopefully all boys will be back on deck and will be confident for victory to book a place in Saturday week’s grand finals.
The James Barker and James Carter coached 16s had the luxury of cooling their heels for a week awaiting to hear who they will play in this week’s final.
I’m positive this week’s training will be concentrated on team morale as this could possibly be the last year these boys play together as a team and I’m sure they would like to finish their junior league careers with a grand final victory.
In other news it was great to hear that Cade Cust had won the best and fairest for the SG Ball team at the Manly Sea Eagles presentation night recently.
This caps off a massive year for Cust, and whisper is he may join us for this year’s presentation day on September 12 at the Scone Sporties. News will out soon on the presentations.
