The improvements shown on the field this year have been remarkable, as many players think about stepping up a grade while others take on leadership roles for newcomers.
This weekend, the club will head up to Armidale for the final gala day of the season.
Scone Junior Rugby 14s have again lifted in skill and confidence to win both encounters in Narrabri on Sunday.
The team had a road trip experience heading up to Narrabri on Saturday to camp on the river before going into battle against the local side and Armidale.
The first game was a very tough encounter with Narrabri keen not to be beaten at home.
We were awarded a penalty try in the final minute of the game when Gilbert O’Brien was hit high as he tried to score.
Matt Smart converted to win the match 7 to 5.
The second game was a higher scoring encounter, but still tough against Armidale.
A strong team performance saw the forwards contest hard at the breakdown and work hard at the set piece to enable the backs to score out wide.
Conor Edwards’ defence was a highlight and he also scored a crucial try.
Smart also crossed the line on two occasions.
Zac Zaricah’s kicking boot made the difference with Scone winning 21 to 17.
The road trip proved to be a success and the team are looking forward to the Armidale carnival this weekend.
Narrabri always produces a great gala day and this was no different.
Well organised and well run … fair play to the Narrabri Blue Boars.
Scone Blue drew Inverell, Gunnedah and the unknown Walgett Lambs.
We were looking forward to all three games with both Inverell and Gunnedah overpowering us in the rucks and mauls in our previous encounters.
Going into half time one try a piece, the lads knew they had to switch on after Inverell had once again got the better of our forwards.
Bailey Park, Josh Crowther and Max Patterson all played their part in getting us a close, but well deserved win.
Game two against Gunnedah once again proved hard work.
The Red Devil’s work in and around the ruck and their defence on the edges was strong and our boys struggled to get into the rhythm of the game.
Once again Bailey and Josh stood up and led from the front with Dan Crowther, Roly Ward-Thomas and the strong Cody Grimes proving to be a handful.
Once again, it was a very tight game with Scone coming away with a well fought narrow victory.
The Walgett Lambs were to be our third and final game of the day, a big team we have never played. This was a game that had it all for some of our players.
Angus Beard, Harry Faulkner, Thomas Burnett, Elliot Bull, Callum Winter, William Crompton and Will Nugent all saved their best game for the Lambs.
Everywhere in attack and defence these lads stepped up and gave Scone a comfortable win after a tough couple of games.
The great Junior Rugby Carnival rolled into Narrabri last Saturday and we were greeted with the warmest conditions of the year.
Game one was against the hosts and our boys were a touch slow out of the gate and found themselves done by three early, but showed encouraging determination to fight out a tough game for the last 20 minutes to record a 4 to 1 loss.
Game two was against a very strong Armidale outfit.
The boys never stopped trying in this one, but just couldn’t find the rhythm we had at our home carnival and went down by 5.
The last game against Inverell was a scrappy affair, but the boys finally found some space and recorded a 3 to 1 victory.
Angus Davidson, Jimmy White and Rourke Sharpe were strong up front and all strove to take the ball forward.
Aiden Cooper and Alex Bishop made some cheeky darts.
Lachy Miller showed some great improvement at the breakdown.
Dan O’Regan, Hunter Ryan, Hamish White and Archie Brooker found space and made some beautiful runs.
Cooper Wilson tried hard all day.
George Bishop and Gus Malone made great improvement with the ball taking some exciting runs out wide and gaining some much needed confidence.
Just one carnival remains before the Cauliflower Cup.
Keep up the great work boys.
The Scone Under 8s took two teams to Narrabri on Sunday.
While it was raining in Scone, Narrabri turned on a beautiful warm and sunny day.
Scone 2 took on Barraba, Quirindi and Narrabri in three hard fought games of rugby.
Charlie Mitchell was strong in attack and defence all day, going about his job with military precision.
Henry Hubbard and Laurie Roche combined well in defence and put together some impressive runs around the fringes while Ben Officer and Sam Gillett made the hard yards through the middle.
Will Officer put in a great all-round performance and copped a few hard knocks for his trouble, but this only drove him to greater heights scoring numerous tries.
Clay Atkinson was consistently in the thick of it all day and both Lindsay Geary and Hamish Davidson put in their best games so far.
They both were pulled up within inches of their maiden tries after barnstorming runs. Great effort.
Bring on Armidale next week.
