A Development Application (DA) was lodged last Thursday to reduce the flexible community space (former Council Chamber) into offices.
We can see it at council or on its website.
We can respond to the wider implications, not just to the details presented in the DA.
We should ask that any partitions or walls are built to be removable, and do not damage the fabric of this heritage listed building; and that no walls are removed.
But how to regain the social cohesion, the conveniences and pleasures of using this perfectly placed and well-designed community centre?
In “Fit for the Future” NSW demands councils to “provide services to the community”… not just to manage money.
We should pursue that.
To pass fit, council needs all aspects ticked.
This building has brought together cultural, social and physical life assets.
What a winning combination!
Council could have profited, surely.
But it now proposes charging the evicted groups for using inappropriate, ad hoc, alternative spaces far away from the buzzing hub of Library, Resource Centre and children’s amenities.
Even those are threatened with limits.
No surprise that the anger is growing.
The sale should be annulled in light of aspects not properly understood at the time.
