The 24-year-old, who won the Group 21 first grade premiership with the Denman Devils earlier this year, is excited about the challenge ahead.
The Tigers finished third last season but were bounced out of the competition following a 38-12 loss to Denman.
“I’ve always thought about being a captain-coach; I’m only young but I’m confident that I’ll have a big year,” Walker said.
“Hopefully I can take the Tigers in the right direction and get them into the grand final.
“I’m a bit nervous already but I’m looking forward to it.”
Walker said the Tigers had already made a number of key additions to the squad, but would also be without the services of First Grade Player of the Year Marcus Marsh.
“Marcus has gone to Lakes United in Newcastle but Luke Freebody has come with me from Denman and Hamish Wolfgang has now signed as well,” he said.
Despite his excitement at being offered the new role, Walker said he had mixed feelings about leaving the Devils.
“Denman looked after me; they brought me up here, got me a house and a start so I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,” he said.
“It was tough but I’ve got a kid on the way so I’ve had to start thinking about what is best for the family.”
Walker said the Tigers were easing into preseason training and would take part in bonding sessions prior to the start of the season.
