More than 100 Year 5 and 6 students from St Mary’s and Scone Grammar schools were taught how to respond in an emergency, and if required, start CPR.
Tamworth lifesaver Cameron McFarlane said it was a vital skill for children to learn before they reach high school.
“It’s very effective and does save lives,” he said.
“The kids really interact well with and get a lot out of it; they have a bit of fun but also take it quite seriously.”
Mr McFarlane is spending his annual holidays visiting 27 towns, and 54 schools, across NSW to deliver the training.
“We’ve been doing it at all the local schools in Tamworth for the past four years, but this is the first statewide one that we have done,” he said.
“We have been able to secure 32 local sponsors and raised about $11,000 towards the awareness campaign.”
Upper Hunter Shire deputy mayor Maurice Collison was impressed by the students earnest efforts practicing their lifesaving skills and hoped the campaign could return next year to more schools in the region.
