In September, 2017, Hunter Street emptied as major roadworks to install a light rail connection from the Newcastle Interchange to the beach began.
But in the late 1800s Hunter Street was a very different place.
In this incredible collection of photos supplied by the University of Newcastle's Cultural Collections with the help of the Vera Deacon Regional History Fund, you can see horse-drawn carriages and unpaved sheets.
Some buildings, like the Crown and Anchor are recognisable in this archival revival, but other streets have changed remarkably over time.
Scroll back in time and take a look at the old shops which used to occupy Hunter streets.
