The Scone Advocate asked each of the Upper Hunter Shire’s 13 candidates two questions to help residents to decide their vote.
The questions were:
- Why should Upper Hunter residents vote for you on September 10?
- What are you hoping to achieve/what are the issues that concern you most?
Here is Sue Abbott’s response:
Question 1: I’ve been an Upper Hunter local since 1983. My husband Richard is a local doctor here, and together we’ve raised and educated four children in Scone.
For me, family and community are everything – that’s why in 2002, I worked with people across the Upper Hunter to save Scott Memorial Hospital from the State Government attempts to downgrade local care. To be strong, our community must be healthy.
Question 2: People of the Upper Hunter are resilient, and when we work together, we win. It’s something I love about our community.
But we all know the next few years are going to be difficult – maybe more than ever before. What happens to our community after the mining boom is something we’re all worried about.
That’s why I’m running to be a councillor. I want to help bring our community together, so that we can do what we do best: overcome challenges, and come out stronger.
So whatever it is you hope for the future of the Upper Hunter – whether it is our libraries, better education and training for our kids, keeping jobs local and well-paid, or finding new opportunities that take real advantage of the incredible place we all live in – I’ll fight with you, and I’ll fight for you.
