Merriwa Tourist Welcoming Centre and Men’s Shed president Edith Shipway said she was delighted to offer an annual $6000 educational bursary to the Merriwa community.
“We wanted to set up an annual bursary to encourage young people to further their education,” she said.
“The Tourist Centre Educational Assistance Bursary (TCEAB) application will be assessed on criteria such as financial need, character and the students overall ambition to succeed.
“Should we receive more than one worthy applicant, the committee may decide to divide the bursary amongst the winners.
“Either way, it’s a great start for someone wanting to go on to further study in 2017.”
In the past year, the Merriwa Tourist Welcoming Centre and Men’s Shed has donated more than $20,000 to Merriwa organisations through the sale of locally-produced arts and crafts.
“What I like most about this bursary, is the funds we have raised has mostly come from out of town from tourists travelling through, but all the money will be going back into our local community,” Mrs Shipway said.
The TCEAB bursary will be paid in semester instalments.
To apply, students must be starting university, full time TAFE or similar program in 2017.
Applicants need to be a resident of the Merriwa district and have completed their studies at Merriwa Central School (or elsewhere if a chosen subject was not available locally).
To find out more, contact Edith Shipway on 0427 487 201, email brigadoon07@bigpond.com or collect an application form from the Tourist Centre, Merriwa Pharmacy or Merriwa Central School.
Applications close on Friday, January 6.
