No fire is permitted to be ignited in any open space while the ban is in place. All fire permits have been suspended until further notice.
The fire danger is listed as ‘very high’ for the Greater Hunter, which incorporates Maitland, Cessnock, Dungog, Lake Macquarie, Muswellbrook, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Singleton and the Upper Hunter.
The temperature had already hit 35.9 degrees by 8.40am Wednesday and is expected to reach 42 degrees during the day.
Lower Hunter RFS Inspector Glenn Byrnes urged people to be mindful of the conditions.
He said people in and around bush land should discuss their fire safety plans and be ready for any situation.
