But, due to the nature of the chemicals, it can be difficult to dispose of them correctly.
Muswellbrook Shire Council is working with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) to help residents clean out their old chemicals and containers the right way.
On Saturday, February 25, from 9am to 3.30pm, people can drop off items at the Muswellbrook Indoor Sports Centre, for the 2017 Household Chemical CleanOut.
Muswellbrook council’s Tracy Ward said it was a free annual service for the community.
“People should take up the opportunity to get rid of any unused chemicals in the house,” she said.
All are encouraged to bring any paints, fire extinguishers, old fluorescent tubes, pesticides, poisons, gas bottles, pool chemicals, hobby chemicals, acids and alkalis to the drop off point.
Only household quantities – a maximum of 20 kilograms or 20 Litres – will be accepted.
Residents are asked to transport materials carefully and to remain in their vehicle at the collection site.
