That was the sentiment of curator Jelle van den Berg at the opening of the Murrurundi and District Historical Society Inc’s first foray into the art sector.
The social function, which took place in the old church hall on Friday evening, saw more than 50 residents attend the inaugural display, Drawing Room and Works on Paper.
“It’s a great concept,” Mr van den Berg said.
“And, a terrific opportunity for local artists to showcase their labours of love.
“The members of the collective (MODS MURR) have been working through a set of workshops to investigate the unique properties of painting on paper, particularly in terms of absorption, creating form through transparency and luminosity.
“The artists bring very different skills and ideas to the project and this shows clearly in the manner of execution in the watercolours.
“Initially tentative and small in scale, the works have developed to grow into an area of spatial dynamics towards abstraction.”
The paintings, and objects, featuring artists Fran Wachtel, Charlotte Drake-Brockman, Pauleen Parker, Meredith Spencer-Lowe and Mr van den Berg will be on view every weekend until March 30.
The museum is also giving the old church hall a renovation and has mapped out plans for further exhibitions in its 2017 calendar.
