Upper Hunter Shire mayor Wayne Bedggood said donations of household goods were not what is required in Cassilis currently.

“If well-meaning people are dropping off second-hand furniture, clothes, linen or perishable goods it could end up being wasted, as has happened at other fire recovery sites,” Cr Bedggood said.

“Those who have surplus household goods should consider holding a garage sale and donating the proceeds to the appeal. 

“Money is the most useful donation because it provides flexibility to meet immediate needs and choice for victims of the fire.

“There has been many useful donations of feed for stock brought to Cassilis. 

“People wishing to donate good quality fodder should phone the NSW Local Lands Services on 1800 814 647.”

A drop in information centre is operating at Cassilis Community Hall from 9am to 4pm this week with representatives and information from council, emergency, government and charity agencies.

Farmers needing assistance with fodder, livestock assessment or emergency water and reporting of damage should call the Department of Primary Industries hotline on 1800 814 647.

Volunteers who wish to assist with rebuilding fencing should contact Blaze Aid who have set up camp at Cassilis Bowling Club.
