Mayor Wayne Bedggood and wife Michelle joined myself along with local people in Merriwa, resulting in bags of rubbish being collected. Overall the level of rubbish was less than in previous years, which highlights that with education and advertising, what started out as a small idea has been embraced by most Australians and made us more aware and proud of our country.
I heard that Murrurundi locals were very active in their efforts around the road to the tip area and Visitor Information Center.
Sir Ivan Fire Appeal
Since the bush fire that burnt over 55,000 hectares of land with high livestock numbers, the generosity of the Australian people has once more been demonstrated by the gifts of money and materials, sheds, generators, fencing materials and moral support for those affected.
There have been truck loads of hay, grain from across the shire and further afield plus the generous donation of over 250 cattle. These cattle will be fattened for market at the Alexander Downs feedlot with the feed ration supplied by Alexander Downs free of charge. The proceeds from the sale will go to the recovery agency and be distributed to the fire victims. Staff from the UHSC have been very active in the assistance and recovery process during and after the fire. Many thanks to those involved.
The Upper Hunter Shire along with the Warrumbungle Shire have set up Mayoral relief funds to assist victims, whilst people from out of the area have joined forces under the banner of Blaze Aid to assist and rebuild the hundreds of kilometres of fences.
These volunteers have been assisted with meals from local organisations all banding together to assist. What a wonderful community spirit that exists.
To assist with rebuilding fencing contact Blaze Aid who are camped at Cassilis Bowling Club. For more information visit www.blazeaid.com/cassilis-nsw-fire-2017 or call 0475 115 899
