On average, one woman a week loses her life to domestic violence, and the ongoing effects are felt throughout the family and community.

The vigil aims to bring public awareness to the community of how important the issue is, and to encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence to seek support.

Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre (SNRC) is hosting the event alongside Upper Hunter Homeless Support and Upper Hunter Shire Council.

“The level of domestic violence in our country is not acceptable and the candle light vigil gives us all an opportunity to show our support and also [highlight] the need to work together and make change,” SNRC manager Lee Watts said.

The vigil has been organised for 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 3 at council’s forecourt to coincide with National Remembrance Day, where candlelight vigils will be held around the country.

The Scone Singers, police and community representatives will attend the event.

Organisers hope that the community will take a little time from their day to come along and join them in remembering the victims of domestic violence.

Refreshments will be served.

The community is invited to bring along a non-perishable food item which will go towards stocking the pantry at Upper Hunter Homeless Support.
