THERE is a new member in the Murrurundi SES Unit.

And, the volunteers introduced “Manikin” to the team this month.

The unit managed to purchase the very vital training aid – in the form of a specially-designed high-tech mannequin, which has been developed for land and water rescue training situations.

This will allow difficult and dangerous exercises to be undertaken by the Murrurundi SES without placing “casualties” in any danger.

“Our level 3 swift water technicians can now safely instruct our other members in the rescue techniques that they learnt at the Sydney-based flood water rescue courses,” deputy controller Ian MacAlpine said.

“The purchase of ‘Manikin’ was made possible due to the fundraising efforts of the Railway Hotel, the Rotary Club of Murrurundi and the Murrurundi citizens who support the events that these locals organise in support of our community.”

Mr MacAlpine said the unit had been kept busy recently.

“A wind storm at the end of March brought down a large old tree onto a house on the corner of Mayne and Murulla streets and, in the process, became entangled in the electrical wires servicing the premises,” he explained.

“We had to contact the power supply company to disconnect the power before we could start work on clearing the damage.

“We worked with the power crew until late at night to allow the residents to re-enter the house safely with restored power and then came back the next morning to complete the job.

“The SES volunteers happily assist their community during emergencies.”
