From their vantage point they watched the arrival of HMAS Newcastle and were next to the fort’s guns as they gave a salute upon its arrival.
1st Scone Scout Leader Greg Morris admitted it was a unique Anzac Day experience.
“We watched the ship’s crew exercise its freedom of the city in time-honoured tradition,” he said.
“A highlight was a tour of the HMAS Newcastle itself.
“The Scouts and Venturers also explored the tunnels of Fort Scratchley, visited Fighter World at the Williamtown RAAF Base, walked the Anzac Memorial Walk after the sunset ceremony and took part in the dedication and lighting of the flame of remembrance in preparation for the Dawn Service.
“From the fort we watched the large crowd gather for the Dawn Service at Nobbys.
“Standing next to the large searchlight in operation was certainly a privilege.
“The fort’s guns marked the end of the Dawn Service, we packed up and then joined the Newcastle Anzac march to Civic Park.
“It’s something we won’t forget in a hurry.”
