The ceremony, on Wednesday, May 3, will acknowledge Domestic & Family Violence Awareness Month and pay tribute to the women and children who have been victims and lost their lives due to family violence.

On average, one woman a week loses her life to domestic violence – and the ongoing effects are felt throughout the family and community. 

The Candlelight Vigil aims to bring public awareness to the community of how important the issue is, and to encourage anyone experiencing domestic violence to seek support.

“The level of domestic violence in our country is not acceptable,” Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre manager Lee Watts said.

“The Candlelight Vigil gives us all an opportunity to show our support and also the need to work together and make change.”

The special service has been organised for 5.15pm on May 3, at the Upper Hunter Shire Council forecourt in Liverpool Street, to coincide with National Remembrance Day, where candlelight vigils will be held around the country.

The Scone Singers, police and community representatives will attend the event.

“We hope residents will take a little time from their day to come along and join us in remembering the victims of domestic violence,” Mrs Watts said.

“Refreshments will be served.”

The community is invited to bring along a non-perishable food item, which will go towards stocking the pantry at Upper Hunter Homeless Support.
