Chances are you’ll be hearing, and seeing, a lot more of the talented young filmmaker in the future.
The Scone High School Year 11 student’s animated offering, Pokemon Battle, has been nominated for Best Mocktail at the JMC Academy Martini Film Awards Sydney at Hoyts Cinema, Broadway, on May 3.
“It’s the first time I’ve entered anything like this,” he said.
“So, I’m a bit shocked to be one of the finalists.
“But, it’s a real honour.”
The premise of the one-minute 20-second short film is simple.
“An angry trainer walks past a very enthusiastic trainer who tries to force the angry trainer to have a Pokemon Battle,” Kalev-Roy said.
“The angry trainer refuses and responds with ranting how battles are a waste of time.
“It took me about four or five weeks to put it together, as I had to write a script for the first time.
“While this was a new experience for me, I’ve actually been working on animated films for five years now.
“I’ve got a site (YouTube/david toons animations) and it’s had 150,000 views.
“I can’t believe that number.”
The 17-year-old is hopeful the Mocktail nomination will open up a few more opportunities.
“I’d love to get into filmmaking on a full-time basis,” he said.
“It’s helped me through bullying, so it’s close to my heart.
“My inspiration is English YouTube celebrity Thomas Ridgewell – and I was lucky enough to work with him.
“That gave me the motivation to try something of my own.
“So, this nomination (at the JMC Academy Martini Film Awards Sydney] is just as much an honour as winning.”
