David O’Meara, a Director of Scone Equine Hospital who have sponsored the Horse Festival Parade since 2011, promises this year’s commemorative event will be the biggest and best yet.
“We are expecting more than 100 horse entries this year – from small ponies to huge Clydesdales. Every year, the Horse Festival Parade is a celebration of the horse and its contribution; not only now, but throughout history as well.
“This year, we will recognise the 100-year anniversary of the famous final mounted charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade during the Battle of Beersheba. The 12th Light Horse Troop from Murrurundi, NSW, will lead the parade in full military attire.”
Fittingly, ‘May the horse be with you’ has been selected as this year’s festival theme, and visitors to the region can expect to see a vast array of costumes and displays.
“The 2017 Horse Festival Parade will be full of colour – from both horse entries, and schools and community groups who prepare decorated floats,” Mr O’Meara said. “This year’s theme certainly encourages a sense of fun and is definitely open to interpretation.
“Whether people want to honour how horses have been with us over time, or simply use the play on words to see how many light sabres and Star Wars characters can fit into one parade; either way, the 2017 parade will truly be a spectacle to be seen.”
Equine and non-equine entry forms are available, and there will be judging of the best dressed and decorated.
“Scone Equine Hospital is pleased to continue our support of the Horse Festival Parade as it is the major focus for locals and visitors to Scone to mark in their calendars,” Mr O’Meara said. “We are excited to see it continue to flourish this year and for many years to come.
“The Scone area has a long history intertwined with the horse and this is still evident now, so ensuring the Horse Festival Parade is a success only helps to build recognition of Scone as the horse capital of Australia.”
The parade will take place from 10.45am until 12 noon along the main streets of Scone.
